Judging from other instances of the verb, and instances of\u00a0<a title=\"Parallelism (rhetoric)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parallelism_(rhetoric)\">parallelism,<\/a> a more faithful translation may be &#8220;he hovered over, guarding.&#8221; Indeed, this is the image used by\u00a0<a title=\"Isaiah\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isaiah\">Isaiah<\/a> by his use of this verb in Isaiah. 31:5: &#8220;As birds hovering, so will the Lord of hosts protect Jerusalem; He will deliver it as He protecteth it, He will rescue it as He\u00a0<em>passeth over<\/em>&#8221; (???????????? ??????\u2014???? ????? ?????? ????????, ???-????????????; ??????? ?????????, ??????? ??????????.) (<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/bibref.hebtools.com\/?book=%20Isaiah&amp;verse=31:5&amp;src=HE\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/bibref.hebtools.com\/?book=%20Isaiah&amp;verse=31:5&amp;src=HE\">Isaiah 31:5<\/a>) Targum Unkoles translates pesach as &#8220;he had pity&#8221;, The English term &#8220;Passover&#8221; came into the\u00a0<a title=\"English language\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/English_language\">English language<\/a> through\u00a0<a title=\"William Tyndale\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Tyndale\">William Tyndale<\/a>&#8216;s translation of the Bible, and later appeared in the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"King James Version of the Bible\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/King_James_Version_of_the_Bible\">King James Version<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n<p>The term\u00a0<em>Pesach<\/em> (<a title=\"Hebrew language\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hebrew_language\">Hebrew<\/a>:\u00a0<span dir=\"rtl\" lang=\"he\">??????<\/span>?) may also refer to the\u00a0<a title=\"Domestic sheep\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Domestic_sheep\">lamb<\/a> or\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Domestic goat\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Domestic_goat\">kid<\/a> which was designated as the Passover sacrifice (called the\u00a0<em><a title=\"Korban\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Korban\">Korban<\/a> Pesach<\/em> in\u00a0<a title=\"Hebrew language\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hebrew_language\">Hebrew<\/a>). Four days before the Exodus, the Hebrews were commanded to set aside a lamb or kid (<a class=\"external text\" title=\"http:\/\/bibref.hebtools.com\/?book=%20Exodus&amp;verse=12:3&amp;src=HE\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/bibref.hebtools.com\/?book=%20Exodus&amp;verse=12:3&amp;src=HE\">Exodus 12:3<\/a>) and inspect it daily for blemishes. During the day on the 14th of Nisan, they were to slaughter the animal and use its blood to mark their lintels and door posts. Up until midnight on the 15th of Nisan, they were to consume the lamb. Each family (or group of families) gathered together to eat a meal that included the meat of the\u00a0<em>Korban Pesach<\/em> while the Tenth Plague ravaged Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>In subsequent years, during the existence of the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Tabernacle (Judaism)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tabernacle_(Judaism)\">Tabernacle<\/a> and later the\u00a0<a title=\"Temple in Jerusalem\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Temple_in_Jerusalem\">Temple in Jerusalem<\/a>, the\u00a0<em>Korban Pesach<\/em> was eaten during the<a title=\"Passover Seder\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Passover_Seder\">Passover Seder<\/a> on the 15th of Nisan. However, following the destruction of the Temple, no sacrifices may be offered or eaten. The\u00a0<em>Seder Korban Pesach<\/em>, a set of scriptural and Rabbinic passages dealing with the Passover sacrifice, is customarily recited during or after the<a title=\"Jewish services\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jewish_services\"><em>Mincha<\/em><\/a> (afternoon prayer) service on the 14th on Nisan.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Passover#cite_note-21\"><span>[<\/span>22<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> The story of the\u00a0<em>Korban Pesach<\/em> is also retold at the Passover Seder,meaning order, and the symbolic food which represents it on the\u00a0<a title=\"Passover Seder Plate\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Passover_Seder_Plate\">Seder Plate<\/a> is usually a roasted lamb\u00a0<a class=\"extiw\" title=\"wiktionary:shank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/shank\">shankbone<\/a>, chicken wing, or chicken neck.<\/p>\n<table class=\"navbox\" border=\"0\"
