These services, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nomorobo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nomorobo<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.privacystar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">PrivacyStar<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truecaller.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Truecaller<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitepages.com\/current-caller-id\" target=\"_blank\">WhitePages<\/a>, rely on blacklists of known robocallers and illegal telemarketers to help block unwanted calls.<\/p>\n<p>Read More<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/101669877\" target=\"_blank\">Change-of-address company must pay $3 million<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A person&#8217;s own phone number is not likely to be on the blacklist, so these telemarketers hope to beat the filtering <a id=\"itxthook1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.today.com\/money\/id-scam-uses-your-own-number-against-you-1D79933382?cid=social_20140716_27931376#\" rel=\"nofollow\">software<\/a> by spoofing that number,&#8221; said Bikram Bandy, head of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.donotcall.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Do Not Call program<\/a> at the Federal Trade Commission. &#8220;Fighting illegal telemarketing calls is a cat and mouse game and these telemarketers aren&#8217;t giving up easily. We didn&#8217;t think they would.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Aaron Foss runs Nomorobo, a free robocall-blocking service for land line phones. There&#8217;s an app for that<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I ran the <a id=\"itxthook2\" href=\"http:\/\/www.today.com\/money\/id-scam-uses-your-own-number-against-you-1D79933382?cid=social_20140716_27931376#\" rel=\"nofollow\">data<\/a> and you can see a marked increase in these calls every month since the beginning of the year,&#8221; Foss said. &#8220;These calls were getting through because the numbers weren&#8217;t on the blacklist. We don&#8217;t want to block good calls and who would call themselves?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nomorobo has now adjusted its call-screening algorithms, as have other similar services, to flag or block incoming calls that appear to be from that same phone number.<\/p>\n<p>Read More<a href=\"http:\/\/www.today.com\/money\/free-service-proves-it-can-block-unwanted-robocalls-2D11867403\" target=\"_blank\">Free service proves it can block unwanted calls<\/a><\/p>\n<p>At PrivacyStar, a free service to stop annoying telemarketing calls on wireless devices, they&#8217;ve spotted another new twist\u2014spoofing the phone number so that it&#8217;s nearly identical to yours, with only the last digit or two being different.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They hope you will think it&#8217;s someone locally calling and answer the phone,&#8221; said Jonathan Sasse, PrivacyStar&#8217;s CMO. &#8220;So from now on, when the call is from a number that is similar to yours, but off by just a few digits, we&#8217;re going to <a id=\"itxthook3\" href=\"http:\/\/www.today.com\/money\/id-scam-uses-your-own-number-against-you-1D79933382?cid=social_20140716_27931376#\" rel=\"nofollow\">alert<\/a> the user to be cautious because this is likely a scammer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Better <a id=\"itxthook4\" href=\"http:\/\/www.today.com\/money\/id-scam-uses-your-own-number-against-you-1D79933382?cid=social_20140716_27931376#\" rel=\"nofollow\">Business<\/a> Bureau recently issued a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbb.org\/council\/news-events\/bbb-scam-alerts\/2014\/06\/scam-alert-how-scammers-use-caller-id-spoofing-to-pose-as-you\/\" target=\"_blank\">scam alert<\/a> about this caller ID spoofing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The best way to foil phone scammers is not to answer the phone if you don&#8217;t recognize the name of the caller, if the caller ID says the number is blocked, or if it&#8217;s an odd situation such as this,&#8221; said BBB spokeswoman Katherine Hutt. &#8220;A legitimate caller will leave a message and you can call them back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2014By CNBC contributor Herb Weisbaum.
