Most of us can\u2019t imagine sinking to this level \u2013 but criminals will.\u201d<\/p>\n<article class=\"embedded-entity align-right\">\n<div class=\"far-content-block-outer-wrapper\">\n<section class=\"block block-entity-block clearfix\">\n<div class=\"far-content-block-outer-wrapper\">\n<article class=\"news content-block clearfix\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div class=\"col-lg-12 col-md-6 far-content-block-image-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www2.floridarealtors.org\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/content_block_image\/public\/page\/image\/2019-09\/gettyimages-670543770.jpg?h=119335f7&amp;itok=wSQYEAk6\" alt=\"man typing on a computer\" width=\"281\" height=\"176\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p>The scam isn\u2019t new, but it\u2019s been off Realtors\u2019 radar for almost a year now. In the past, initial emails seemed to be from Florida Realtors, but a later round of emails appeared to be sent by at least one local Realtor association.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe latest version refers to a little boy named Grayson and claims he has a \u2018life-threatening tumor\u2019 called cholesteatoma,\u201d says Grant. \u201cGrayson isn\u2019t real, and cholesteatoma isn\u2019t even a life-threatening tumor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Realtors should also be wary of any email asking help for a specific child. While each version of the ongoing email scam has similarities, the photos, children\u2019s names, diseases and apparent senders change over time.<\/p>\n<p>Florida Realtors has charitable programs to help those in need, such as Florida Realtors\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.floridarealtors.org\/about\/charities\/disaster-relief-fund\">Disaster Relief Fund<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.floridarealtors.org\/about\/charities\/silent-angels\">Silent Angels<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 but it does not email members directly asking for donations, especially for a single member in need \u2013 nor do Florida\u2019s local associations.<\/p>\n<h3>Signs to look for in a Realtor email scam<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sender\u2019s email address<\/strong>: Check the \u201cfrom\u201d email address, notably the part behind \u201c@.\u201d If it isn\u2019t the same as the association that apparently sent it &#8212; @floridarealtors.org for Florida Realtors \u2013 someone else sent it. (Note: Even if the email address appears legit, call the sender by phone to confirm, since even this can be faked.) In the \u201cHelp Grayson\u201d scam, it\u2019s an unknown website.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Where does the \u201cdonation\u201d go?<\/strong>: In the latest scam, the sender asks for money to a GoFundMe website page, but the actual link goes to PayPal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Trust your gut<\/strong>: If Grayson needs $7,500 for surgery, why would an email be sent to over 180,000 Florida Realtors members?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Florida Realtors is working to stop the funding mechanism for this scam.
