ORLANDO, Fla. \u2013 No Realtor association asks members to donate money to help Grayson or any other child \u2013 but a new scam supposedly from Florida Realtors seems to do so.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a scam,\u201d says Margy Grant, CEO of Florida Realtors. \u201cThese scammers know that people won\u2019t turn their backs on suffering children, and they hope Realtors will open their hearts and pocketbooks to help members of the Realtor family. Most of us can\u2019t imagine sinking to this level \u2013 but criminals will.\u201d<\/p>\n

The scam isn\u2019t new, but it\u2019s been off Realtors\u2019 radar for almost a year now. In the past, initial emails seemed to be from Florida Realtors, but a later round of emails appeared to be sent by at least one local Realtor association.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe latest version refers to a little boy named Grayson and claims he has a \u2018life-threatening tumor\u2019 called cholesteatoma,\u201d says Grant. \u201cGrayson isn\u2019t real, and cholesteatoma isn\u2019t even a life-threatening tumor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Realtors should also be wary of any email asking help for a specific child. While each version of the ongoing email scam has similarities, the photos, children\u2019s names, diseases and apparent senders change over time.<\/p>\n

Florida Realtors has charitable programs to help those in need, such as Florida Realtors\u00a0Disaster Relief Fund<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Silent Angels<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 but it does not email members directly asking for donations, especially for a single member in need \u2013 nor do Florida\u2019s local associations.<\/p>\n
