Of Being Southern and Ya’ll . . .

Having grown up in the South (yes, I lost my accent, thank you), one is exposed to many momalies or “old wives’ tales.”

1. Don’t look at a monkey while you are pregnant, or you will surely “mark” the baby. That means, your kid will come out looking like the latest arrival at Monkey Jungle.

2. Don’t stretch upward while you are pregnant or you’ll tangle the umbilical cord around the baby’s neck.

When I was “with child,” (29 years ago) I challenged my grandmother on No. 1. Her response was, “I wouldn’t want to look at a monkey anyway — and by the way, Aunt Thelma Lou looked at a monkey while she was carrying your cousin Bill, and I swear he looked just like a monkey. It must be true. She marked that baby — for life.”

“Come no, Grannie.”

“Then why did the porter on the train offer her a banana for her pet monkey?”

Some of these wives’ tales have some truth to them. One that has held true for me throughout my life has been the itching left hand.

Yes, when your left hand itches, it means you’re comiImageChef.com - Custom comment codes for MySpace, Hi5, Friendster and moreng into money.

Your left hand is itching, isn’t it — it is itching right now. I know what you’re thinking — power of suggestion and all.

Live with an expectant heart!

Mine’s been itchin’ all day . . . .oh, yeah, tomorrow is payday!

See!!!! I told you it works!!!!!!!

I’ll have to check my notes. I am sure there are more. Of course, my Grannie always said, “if your hand is itchin’ could mean it needs a’washin’.” I prefer the money concept.

No, Tammy, we always ate Hart’s bread because the bakery was located on Mendenhall — right in Memphis. Also, my neighbor next door worked for the bakery….hmmmmm…. you could smell that bread baking for miles. Did you know that “sense of smell” is the strongest memory?
