SQUARE PEGS – ROUND HOLES

You know those intelligence tests they have for little kids where they give them a bunch of different shaped objects — squares, rectangles, circles, triangles — along with a form that has a bunch of different shaped holes? I think it’s called a three dimensional insertion task. Anyway, the kids get a really high score if they quickly place the objects into the correspondingly shaped holes. That’s how to think of photos and the ads in which you want them to appear. For instance, if you’re placing an ad in the EWM Mailer, you know the photo of your listing will always appear as a horizontal image. Even if you select a vertically oriented photo to use in the ad, in the end it will still have to fit within the horizontal space allotted to it. Something’s going to have to give to make that happen. The top or bottom of the photo, or maybe even both, will have to be cropped so the image will fit. The roof may be cut off, the lawn eliminated entirely — and the result may not be at all what you envisioned when you submitted your ad.Take control of the look of your marketing materials. Submit good quality, appropriately shaped and sized photos for all your advertising, whether it’s for print or for viewing on the web. That way everyone will think you’re an intelligent little kid. Ugh, that didn’t come out right! I’ll get back to you later with a better fitting phrase.

    Susie,

Your information is priceless and most likely endless! Please keep passing it on. Like you: For me, taking a photo is a major challenge…providing one that ‘fits’ the space is a major challenge.
