Do you have teenagers at home?  If you do, there has to be a time that you begin to wonder – what are they doing online all the time?  Their answer many times, is that they are spending time on Social Networks like MySpace and Facebook.

It is pretty clear that at this point online social networks are becoming mainstream business tools. So what if anything does this have to do with real estate?  If you look at may of the top producing real estate agents you will find that many of them are ” well connected”.

In the real world, we join BNI groups, PTA’s, Junior League, Chambers of Commerce, Condo Associations, Alumni Groups, etc.  The real estate business is all about networking, so it doesn’t take a giant leap of logic to see that there can be real value with supplementing your real world activity with some online networking.

Social Networks are a way to reach out to your sphere of influence and their sphere of influence on a regular basis in an easy fashion.  How often have you experienced the real estate agent’s nightmare of running into an old acquaintance in the mall only to hear “I wish I had known you were in real estate.  I just bought a house.” ? Imagine how much more business you could have done in your career had you just been able to keep in touch with everyone you knew in high school, college and your life before real estate.  Now multiply that by everyone they know.  The implications are staggering.

Social Networks are still in the early stages with much of their business potential is still to be discovered.  The one thing I know for certain is that you need to be there.  There are many detailed lessons in the 90 Day Challenge about using Social Networks, but the first step is to join some of the Social Networks.

Your homework: Sign up one some of the Social Networks out there.  Here are some of the ones we will be working on in future challenges.

Join Linked In!

Users can join networks organized by city, workplace, school, and region to connect and interact with other people. People can also add friends and send them messages, and update their personal profile to notify friends about themselves.

Join Facebook!

Both of these networks have EWM groups or pages.  Find the EWM group in LinkedIn and the EWM realtors page in Facebook.  Connect with your fellow EWM associates.  You are now a Social Caterpillar on your way to becoming a Social Butterfly.

    I feel like a kid faced with all of my favorite ice cream flavors, taking big bites and suddenly experiencing brain freeze.

    Beth, you are so prolific, I’m simply out of breath trying to keep up. Although I will lag behind a little, I will eventually get to the finish line.
