Somebody Give Me A Headline!

Somebody give me a headline. I had “A pound of the fear of possible lawsuits is not worth an ounce of blogging.”
See what I mean? Here goes . . .

shopping cart“I’m Gumby, Dammit!”I hear there is a debate about blogging listings and the fear of being sued over the comments. While working at the Container Store (yes, pre-EWM), I learned their policy on preventing inventory loss (theft): They don’t have one.
[The Container Store mascot is “Gumby” chosen for his flexibility.]

When you go to Marshalls or Comp USA and you have to use the shopping carts with the long poles designed to keep you from being able to take the cart out of the store, it’s annoying, especially if your purchases are heavy. Just a few people steal carts, but those stores make us all pay the price for that.

The Container Store’s philosophy is why punish 95% of customers who don’t steal, by treating them like the 5% who do? When and if someone steals in the store, you worry about it right then. HOW LIBERATING is that?! How many behaviors have we learned to practice 100% of the time in situations where something bad may happen only 5% of the time, or, might never happen?

I hope we don’t punish 95% of sellers and 100% of the interested buyers by not blogging listings just because there might be 5% of the population who might post something that the seller might not like and might sue over . . . Just food for thought. As for the rest of it I say, “free speech”.

Nice article, Helen. My guess is that it’s a lot less than 5% of potential customers who steal from stores, or who would consider suing over comments on a blog! Blogging your listings is FREE advertising. Who couldn’t use that kind of help in this market?
