    Susie,

That’s a Zapote, also called Zapodilla o Nispero. You know in Spanish, there is always more than one word to say the same thing. The fruit is off-white in color with slightly large black seeds. The outside is kind of fuzzy and brown. They will stain your clothes – particularly the white sap the comes out of the stem when you pull the fruit from the tree.
I discovered them when I moved down from Chicago many years ago and have enjoyed them ever since.

    Enjoy!

In the Bahamas we call them sapodillas. The fruit is luscious. When they are ripe they are soft to the touch (quite soft, like you can squish them with your thumb). They have a few large smooth black seeds (very pretty seeds) inside that are easy to see or spit out. You can even eat the skin, brush them off with your hand first. It’s no worse than the skin (maybe better) of a kiwi. When they ripen the ‘meat’ near the skin is a darker color like honey and very sweet. 🙂
