90 Day Challenge- Day 1 – Examining Your Environment – The Cell Phone

Where to start?  Seems to me the obvious answer is at the beginning.  At least for the purpose of the 90 Day Challenge the beginning is to address where you are now and examine your environment.  Do you have the things at your disposal everyday that make the real estate business work for you?

So then let’s begin with the most fundamental of our tools… our cell phones.  Can you imagine your day without a cell phone?  How many times have you felt the panic associated with a lost or missing phone?  Incredible when you consider that the cell phone as a business tool has been around less that 20 years.  Let’s look at the last 20 years of cell phones…

What does your cell phone say about you?  What year are you stuck in?  Like it or not your cell phone identifies your tech adaptation.  It is the most obvious statement about how connected you are.  So, what do you need in a cell phone in real estate?

  1. Of course, you need for the phone to work as a phone.  We need to make and place calls. The telephone is still the lifeline of the real estate business.
  2. Text messaging – the communication of the immediate and in real estate – it is essential.  Many of the new tools call for the texting of information.  Teach yourself to use the keyboard and start texting!
  3. Email – yes – I think we need to be able to get emails whenever you need to wherever you are.  Understand that you can lose business by not staying on top of your emails.  Once or twice a day is not enough anymore.
  4. Internet – Access to the internet on your cell phone is optional, but can be quite useful.  MLS access and tax roll info is now available for you.most of the new phones will allow internet access through WIFI, or wireless interent – which is popping up everywhere. (TIP: want the MLS on your phone?  Click here for all of the info)
  5. Applications – the latest and greatest.  These are optional, but applications are the future of the cell phone.  As the evolution continues, the cell phone assumes more and more functions of a computer.
  6. Hands Free – yes, we all need to be hands free in the car.  Safety for you and your customers is a must!
  7. GPS – knowing where the phone is at all times.  A bit scary, but ultimately quite useful for real estate – just think of the saying Location, Location, Location and you can begin to understand how important Geo Locational and Positioning is to our business.  Trulia has come up with an awesome GPS application… watch this video to understand.

Lesson for Day 1 – Maybe it’s time to upgrade your cell phone.  What will it be?

Yes, Beth, being totally accessible via phone, email and text is imperative to our business. Since you got the first iPhone, and were so please with it, I have been contemplating buying one, but I couldn’t part with my Blackberry. On July 11th, I made my husband get up at 6:00am to stand in line with me for the new iPhone. I couldn’t be happier with all of the applications available on this phone…. thanks!!

I think the iPhone is like having a laptop that also answers your phone and it has opened up so many possibilities for the real estate business. I have Trulia.com, MLS, EWM Realtors and anything else at my fingertip anywhere I am. Someone moved the location of my cheese for sure!

Beth, thanks for the post, I could not part with my Blackberry and take advantage of all the extra functions that come along with it. Blackberry is coming out soon with a couple of new phones: Blackberry Storm and Blackberry Bold, both appear to be looking to give the Iphone some good competition. I would also like to add some info on a site I use to keep updated with all the new apps for my Blackberry Curve: http://www.pinstack.com. Its a great site with blogs, forums, etc. If ever you are stumped with a particular problem with your phone you can just post it on the forum or search in the past posts for other people that have had the same problem and have found a solution.

I read your post this morning on my Palm Treo. But then I drive a Volvo 🙂 Looking forward to getting a new iPhone soon. Thanks for the info. Also looking forward to the next 89 days. Regards. Lori

No Blackberry; No Tool! I am more than delighted with all of the features and practicality of my BB Curve. My email is immediately directed to my cell, so I am prompt to reply. Also I can search the web and more importantly, I can go on the MLS. The accessibility of being able to go on the MLS is particularly valuable when I am working with buyers and drive by homes they want more info on. I rarely have to use my laptop any more, since my Blackberry.

I love my Blackberry. I have my EWM mail, gmail with Google alerts, Facebook and LinkedIn all on my phone. Hmmm guess I need to see if Trulia has a Blackberry app. Thanks Beth. I thought of you the other day with the Twitter article in the paper! Will that be one of the challenges?

I use the TREO 800w. It also has WiFi, GPS & comes with all of the MS software & a PDF viewer, so looking at attachments is easy, no matter what program is used. It’s pretty fast & smaller than the earlier versions of the TREO, & the internet connection is also faster than earlier versions.

The Trulia tour was pretty cool. I’ll be checking that out. Thanks for sharing!

I got my iPhone 2 weeks ago and now I am hooked on it. I do not need to carry my laptop with me anymore. Once you use the iPhone, you do not want to go back to any other cell phones. You can attend the workshops at the Apple store at the Falls at anytime to learn more features on the iPhone. Schedules of the workshop can be found at http://www.apple.com/retail/thefalls.

Beth, I was out of town without cellphone or internet service last week when the challenge began. At first I thought I would lose my mind but after a day or two I actually appreciated things I’ve forgotten about, like watching the sunset, meeting people at the little cafes I visited, talking about the weather with the innkeeper.

Maybe I was just in vacation mode but it was the first time since I can remember that I wasn’t checking my email every half hour. I love my Blackberry but I’m going to spend more time talking to people than emailing or texting them from now on.

Thank-you all for your comments. I was considering a new phone for months before the challenge started. Then I went crazy researching the iPhone, PDA phones, the Blackberry, etc. Also, I was trying not to switch carriers. But now that I know I can access EWM Realtors, the MLS, my email with an iPhone…I’m sold. I should have my new phone in couple of days. Thanks everyone!
