Lost. The dictionary defines the word as “to fail inadvertently to retain (something) in such a way that it cannot be immediately recovered.”
Lost does not necessarily mean “gone forever.” A lost item just means that it cannot be immediately recovered.
Have you ever lost a file on your computer? You created it or downloaded it, and you could not remember where you saved it. You’ve spent minutes, maybe hours, looking in where you thought you might have saved it. Clouded in doubt, you gave up wondering if you ever saved it in the first place.
You have a printed copy. Do you scan it in and save it as a pdf — only to find out it is no longer editable? Or do you have an OCR (optical character recognition-scanner) and save the scan as a text file only to have to reformat the entire document? Horrors . . . .
There’s hope!
By clicking on the START button at the lower left-hand corner of your screen (in most cases), click on the magnifying glass and watch the following video for an example of how to find that misplaced file on your computer.

“We live or we die by the clock, and we never turn our back on it, and we never ever allow ourselves the sin of losing track of time.” Chuck Noland, Castaway
